Description

The Town Council Offices, also known as No 3, are located on the north side of Church Lane. The earliest part of the building dates back to the 15th century and was extended eastwards around 1600. A double gabled wing was added to the north (rear) around the same time, with further alterations made in the 18th century. The building features exposed timber framing and stands two storeys high with dormers.

On the earliest section facing Church Lane, the timber framing is closely set, and the first floor projects along the entire south front, supported by a moulded bressumer and corbels. The windows on the upper floor are three and five-light casements set in projecting frames, with old wooden mullions and transoms. The ground floor includes three small early 19th-century canted bays with glazing bars. The west end of the building has a high brick base, while the north (rear) side is timber framed with wide panels that are plastered.

Inside, the southern section features a dragon ceiling beam and late 16th or early 17th-century panelling with a cornice and fluted frieze. Below the ceiling beam, there are pilasters with panels of carved foliage. The Town Council Offices, along with No 3, public lavatories, Hawkes and Terry, the Prince of Wales Inn, the Old Grammar School, and Rutherglen, form a notable group.
