Description

The Old Toll House and Turnpike Cottage, now two houses, were likely built around 1869, possibly as a toll house and accompanying cottages. The construction is primarily red brick, with a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate and three brick stacks rising from the ridge. The building has a three-unit plan, now functioning as two separate dwellings.

The two--storey elevation has a three-window range. The windows are predominantly two-light casements with ogee heads, set within brick ogee arches. A 20th-century cross-window is present to the left, and a further window has a scrolled and pierced eaves-board. The entrance to No.1 features a six-fielded-panel door flanked by cross-windows with leaded lights, all within a canted porch with a hipped pentice roof and a verandah supported by stone columns. No.2 has a 20th-century six-panel door, accompanied by a restored ogee-headed window, a 20th-century cross-window, and a blocked opening. The left return side displays further ogee-headed windows – one with a casement and one with leaded lights – above two 20th-century cross-windows. A tablet dated 1869 is visible, along with returned eaves detailing. The interiors of the properties have not been inspected.
