Description
Nos. 4, 5, and 5A on King Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates back to the late 15th century. The building features a timber-frame structure with plaster infill and a twin-gabled roof covered in plain tiles. It has two storeys and a two-window range, with 20th-century mullion and transom leaded casements that have replaced earlier oriel windows, all set within post-and-pan framing. The building is adorned with carved barge-boards that have pendants and moulded wood eaves. The shop fronts are also from the 20th century, featuring an oak fascia board beneath a moulded and modillioned bressumer. Inside, the first floor retains some original timber-framing, while the ground floor includes a post with an arch brace supporting a billeted bressumer. This building is noted for having the earliest street elevation in the city.
