Description
Bullinghope War Memorial is a First World War memorial with later additions for other conflicts, located within the churchyard to the south of the Church of St Peter, which is also a Grade II-listed building.
The memorial is made of rough-hewn granite and is designed in the shape of a Greek cross atop a tapering shaft. This shaft rises from a tapering four-sided plinth, which sits on a single-step base.
On the south face of the plinth, there is a smooth inset panel that features the main dedication and the names of the fallen, all rendered in incised lettering and painted black. The dedication states: "IN PERPETUAL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THE PARISHES OF BULLINGHOPE/ GRAFTON AND LOWER BULLINGHAM WHO LAID/ DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by seven names.
Additionally, two later metal plaques have been attached to the plinth. The plaque on the north face lists the names of those who died in the Second World War, while the plaque on the east face commemorates the single casualty from the conflict in Afghanistan.
