Description
The Oxford Arms Hotel dates primarily from the 18th century, with restoration work undertaken in the 20th century and a front elevation designed in a matching 18th-century style. The hotel is constructed of rendered material, topped by a hipped roof with old plain tiles, and features rendered lateral stacks. It is three storeys high and has a five-window front. The windows are mainly late 19th-century 3/6 sash windows, with flanking canted bays featuring 2/4: 3/6: 2/4 sash windows. A modillioned stone cornice runs along the top of the building. A central Venetian window has 2/4: 6/6: 2/4 sash windows, topped by foliate swags, and is flanked by 3/6 sash windows. The building has a central cambered open pediment, flanked by plain pediments, and moulded eaves. The central entrance consists of margin-glazed double-doors and a swagged fanlight, set within a moulded roundheaded case, and is flanked by canted bays containing 2/4: 3/6: 2/4 sash windows, all under a moulded hood with a balcony and spat balusters. Further canted bays are also present. The right returned side shows a returned cornice and eaves detail, and a buttress stack. A rear wing has two leaded-light windows set beneath gauged brick flat arches. The left returned side contains rubble to the rear, a 6/6 sash window, and an oak post and plate. The rear of the building is roughcast, and includes a rear wing with an apsidal lean-to.
