Description

This is an early 18th-century house, though it has earlier origins. It is constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks. The house has a rectangular plan aligned east/west, and includes a cellar and three storeys. The north elevation has five windows, featuring glazing bar sashes with cambered heads, except for a late 19th-century central porch with a six-panelled pine front door. A plat band runs between the floors, and the eaves have a dentilled brick cornice. Two late 20th-century roof lights are present. A one-storey extension has been added to the right side.

Inside, a late 19th-century pine staircase has three flights, with turned balusters and carved newels. There are three fireplaces from the mid-19th century, with one dating to around 1900 and featuring Art Nouveau-style tiles. A late 19th-century Unitas water-closet with an enriched bowl is found in the bathroom. A projecting first-floor room at the rear has a moulded 18th-century plaster ceiling, featuring an oval panel surrounded by four bird motifs. The hall contains six-panelled 18th-century doors leading to adjoining rooms. The kitchen has an elaborate late 19th-century cast iron range.

The roof structure includes a pegged king-post truss. Within the main roof, and above the main ties, there is close-studded partition work that formerly divided servants' quarters. The roof trusses in this space have interrupted collars supported by angle struts. Martin’s Croft was formerly the Rectory.
