Description

The building comprises a school, chapel of St Peter and St Paul, and a house, located approximately 80 metres south of the monastery buildings of the Benedictine Abbey of St Michael and All Angels. It demonstrates group value as a significant component of the abbey complex.

The west front of the teachers' house displays three storeys on the right and two on the left. The right-hand portion features three bays, with an arched entrance set beneath a gabled porch. The porch has low stone walls flanking a timber superstructure. Mullioned and transomed windows of two lights are positioned at either side, with two-light casements on the first and second floors, and a single-light window above the porch. The left-hand part of the front presents a single bay with a similar mullioned and transomed window to the ground floor. A two-light dormer window with decorated timber bargeboards sits above this bay, and a matching window is situated on the second floor to the right. The gabled south reveal incorporates a square, projecting bay with a hipped stone roof at ground floor level, featuring mullions and a transom. A three-light casement sits above this, with a single-light casement in the gable. The gable also has kneelers and a coping with a partially missing iron finial. The schoolroom’s eastern side has four bays of windows, separated by buttresses with offsets, each with three lights and foiled heads. A large stack with five flues is situated between the schoolroom and the house. Recessed to the right is the flank of the sanctuary, with a small sacristy exhibiting a catslide roof. The eastern end features a traceried window illuminating the sanctuary, with two cusped lights and a quatrefoil at the apex; the gable has kneelers and a coping, formerly topped with an iron finial. Above and behind this, the gable end of the schoolroom supports a stone sanctus bellcote with an arched opening and gabled top, now lacking its bell.

The north flank mirrors the south front with a similar schoolroom window and a boiler chimney with offsets and an octagonal cap. A flat-roofed extension, dating to the 20th century, now partially obscures the right-hand side of this front. A stack with octagonal brick flues is visible on the gable end of the convent house to the right.

Internally, the schoolroom is roofed with timber, displaying scissor-beam trusses rising from stone corbels and two ranks of purlins with a ridge beam. The sanctuary area has been adapted to function as part of a meeting hall, although the original lateral walls retain recessed panels designed to accommodate chancel doors, which would have been closed for weekday school use and opened for weekend religious services. A low door with an arched head to the right of the sanctuary arch leads to the sacristy. The convent house showcases a staircase with chamfered balusters and newels topped with domed square caps. Fitted cupboards are present in two rooms, and fire surrounds are chamfered.
