Description
This is a barn located about 70 yards east of Paradise, possibly built in the mid-18th century and extended in the later 19th century. It has a rubble base and south gable wall, with a timber-frame structure, weatherboards, and a stone slate roof. The barn consists of five bays and features a catslide extension to the west, with central opposed entrances, the larger one on the east raised under a raking top. The frame includes two panels high from the deep rubble base to the wall-plate, with woven panels of oak laths filling the upper range of panels on the west side of the north bay. The end bays appear to be 19th-century extensions made with smaller scantling. Inside, the central bays have ties with raking struts, while the outer bays have collars supported by vertical posts and tension braces to the corner posts. The catslide extension is made from rubble, and the south gable end includes a pitching-hole for what was once an upper storey in the southernmost bay. Based on the details of the posts and rails, it seems the building was originally designed with a continuous range of woven top panels, except for the unframed south end. This barn forms a group with Paradise.
