Description
The Feathers Hotel is a Grade II* listed building located on the west side of High Street. It consists of two adjoining blocks that were formerly two houses, with the left block dating from 1560-1670. This block features three storeys and five gables in the attic, which have moulded bargeboards and pendants. The attic storey was added in the early 17th century. The structure is timber-framed with closely set studding and has carved pilasters on each storey. The attic and third floor project on moulded bressummers, and there are two canted bays with sash windows on the ground floor. A coach entrance is located on the left, featuring flush panelled double doors. Most of the sash windows have glazing bars.
The right block, which stands slightly forward of the left, dates from the early 17th century and also has three storeys. It is constructed with close-set timber framing and plaster filling, topped with a hipped slate roof. The top storey projects, while the storey below, which used to project, has been underbuilt. Moulded bressummers are present on each floor, and below the top bressummer and eaves cornice are scrolled brackets with Ionic caps. There is a sash window and a bay on the right side of the first floor.
At the rear of the two blocks, there is a late 17th-century wing that features a portion of the roof covered with heavy stone slates. The interior has been much altered, but much of the timber framing is exposed. The first floor of the south block has a ceiling decorated with a cross within a large circle. There is also a somewhat altered staircase from the late 17th century, which has twisted balusters and heavy moulded strings.
The Feathers Hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 21 to 23, Nos 26 and 27, and St Katherine's Chapel and Hall.
