Description
St Katherine's Chapel, Hall and Stable is a Grade II* listed building located on the west side of High Street. The hospital was founded in 1232 by Bishop Hugh Foliot, but the chapel and hall, which are under one roof, were likely built around 1330-1340. The structure features local stone rubble walls and a tiled roof with a gabled end facing High Street. This gable includes three mid-14th century windows: the central window has three trefoil ogee lights with tracery in a two-centred head and a moulded label, while the side windows each have a single lancet light.
On the north wall, there is a window with one trefoil light, and the south wall has two windows, one of which is a blocked lancet, while the other features two trefoil lights in a two-centred head. The roof dates from the 17th century, but a 14th-century truss with curved braces forming a segmental pointed arch remains, marking the division between the chapel and the hall. Above this, there is a tall shingled lantern with a concave-sided turret and a weather vane dated 1763.
The building contains some 14th to 15th-century glass in the windows, along with tiles from the same period. A 17th-century communion table is present, as well as a clock dated 1642, which has a chain for weights running in a wooden channel under the roof. An old slipper bath in the hall is dated 1805. At the west end, there is a stable with timber-framed gable ends and four continuous wooden lighting perches for pigeon nesting boxes.
St Katherine's Chapel, Hall and Stable is part of a group that includes Nos 21 to 23 (consecutive), The Feathers Hotel, and Nos 26 and 27.
