Description

St Katherine's Hospital and Almshouses, founded in 1232 by Bishop Foliot, has no remaining parts of the original building. The structure features a central low stone tower above a four-centred arch gateway, flanked by wings on either side. The south wing was rebuilt in 1822 according to designs by Sir Robert Smirke, showcasing three stone gables with drip moulds above the windows. The north wing was rebuilt in 1866, also featuring three gables, imitation timber framing, and three-light stone mullion windows, all with leaded-pane casements. The roofs are covered with slate and tiles. At the rear, there is a continuous timber verandah on the first floor, providing a covered walkway below.
