Description

Greyfriars Surgery is a house, now a surgery, dating primarily from the early 19th century, incorporating a 13th-century element. The building is constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof, gabled to St Nicholas Street, and features a brick end stack and two lateral stacks.

The front of the building, facing St Nicholas Street, has a tall round-headed window with coloured leaded lights. To the left is a half-glazed two-panel door with a coloured overlight, set within a panelled case and covered by a flat wooden hood supported by consoles. A six-over-six sash window is to the right. A section of house wall abuts the City Wall to the left. There is a wing to the left.

The west front features a stone basement abutting a bastion, with a dressed stone storeyband. A central 20th-century oak door is flanked by 19th-century plain sashes set within stone segmental arches. The upper floor has casements with plain and leaded glazing.

Inside, a 19th-century dogleg staircase has turned newels, balusters, and moulded rails. On the second floor are six-panel doors with simplified entablatures, cornices, and a partial-glazed two-panel door. A 19th-century fireplace is also present. The first floor features two corner fireplaces, one in an Adamesque style, and a picture rail. There is a late 19th-century part-glazed door and overlight in a pointed arch architrave, as well as a five-panel door. The ground floor includes panelled doors, a 20th-century fireplace, and a picture rail. The basement contains a plank door with access to the City Wall.
