Description
The Chapel of St John is a Grade II* listed building located in Brockhampton by Ross. It dates back to the 12th century, with alterations and enlargements made in the 14th century, and further changes in the 16th or 17th centuries. The chancel was rebuilt in 1827. The chapel is constructed of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof.
The structure includes a nave and chancel. The nave has a raised west verge and a 19th-century single trefoil-headed light to the left, along with a pair of similar lights to the right of the south doorway, which has a chamfered pointed-arched head, plain imposts, and chamfered jambs, likely from the 18th century. There is a single lancet window in the chancel.
Inside, the chapel retains a 14th-century roof with swept braces to the collar. Notable fittings include a 12th-century tub-shaped font with a scalloped top and sloped base, as well as sections of a screen against the west end of the nave. The chapel also features 15th-century two-centred arched heads with decorative quatrefoils in roundels in the spandrels.
