Description

Putson Manor is a house dating from the 16th century. It is constructed of timber framing with plaster and brick, and includes stone rubble. The building has a central and end stacks; the stacks have stone bases and brick chimneys. The plan is L-shaped.

The east front features post-and-pan framing, with a gable to the left of an oriel with 20th-century metal casements. The fenestration is largely 19th century. A 19th-century margin-glazed door is located centrally, beneath a jetty with a chamfered bressumer on arched brackets. To the left of the door is a restored 20th-century bay, and to the right, a 20th-century metal casement within 19th-century stick framing. The left returned side contains a 20th-century metal door and casement, and a buttress-stack with a stone rubble base. A single-storey outhouse with a Welsh slate roof is situated to the right, abutting a stone rubble gable wall.

The west front also exhibits post-and-pan framing, featuring a 19th-century lean-to porch and a 19th-century plank door in the porch to the west gable. 20th-century extensions are attached to the west.

Inside, a late 18th/early 19th century dogleg staircase has stick balusters to the first floor; a winder stair with stick balusters leads to the attic. In the attic is a plank door. The first floor contains a 17th-century panelled room, an 18th-century fire surround, a plank door, and chamfered ceiling beams. Further features on this floor are 4-panel doors, chamfered joists, jowelled posts, a 19th-century fire surround, two wall cupboards with panelled doors and H-hinges.

On the ground floor are 6-panel doors, a 4-panel door, plank doors, and chamfered ceiling beams with pyramid-stop chamfers. A moulded stone fireplace is inscribed “R.C,” and other features include a wall cupboard, picture rail, a chamfered stone fireplace, a 17th-century panelled dado, a chamfered ceiling-frame, a 17th-century plasterwork ceiling, and exposed post-and-pan framing. The cellar contains a mutilated winder stair, a plank door, stone lining, and a plank door to exterior steps.
