Description

Warryfield Farmhouse is a farmhouse, with an agricultural building at its west end, dating to the 16th century or earlier, and with alterations in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Parts of the structure are cruck-framed, while others feature square-panelled post and rail framing. The south side is clad in rubble stone, the central section of the north side has timber framing with painted brick infilling, and one section to the left is faced in red brick. The building is aligned east-west, facing north-south, and has two storeys. The south front has irregular fenestration: five windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor. The windows at the extreme left on both floors have boarded hatches, while the others are casements. Two gabled porches are present, one to the right of centre and the other to the extreme right. A break in the wall, halfway up on the right side, suggests the building may have been raised at some point. The north front is similarly irregular, with six windows on the first floor and four on the ground floor, featuring a mix of casement styles and dates. A staircase to the right leads to the first floor of the agricultural building. A boarded door is at the extreme left of the timber-framed section, and a half-glazed door is towards the right of that section. Inside, at least four bays of timber framing are visible, with cruck blades visible in a first-floor room at the east end. There is an early 18th-century winder staircase with turned balusters and a flat handrail. The building was likely originally of hall-house plan and may be an unusual example combining cruck and post and rail timber framing.
