Description
Hyatt Sarnesfield is a Grade II* listed farmhouse that likely dates back to the 14th century, with remodels in the 18th century and again in the late 19th century. The building features a timber frame with brick cladding and extensions, topped with Welsh slate roofs and sandstone rubble and brick stacks. It has a U-shaped plan, with the main former hall-range oriented northeast to southwest and projecting arms to the southeast.
The southeast elevation, which is from the late 19th century, has a symmetrical arrangement of windows with a 1:2:1 pattern, featuring four-pane late 19th-century sashes set under blue brick cambered heads. There is a central gable brick porch with a four-panelled door. The northwest elevation includes a projection on the left, likely from the early 19th century, with a cast-iron casement window on its right-hand return. The first floor of the main range has four cross-casements, probably from the 18th century, and to the right is a large sandstone rubble side stack.
Inside, the structure has seven bays of trusses, likely from the 14th century, alternating between massive cambered ties with cusped raking struts and collars supported by arch-braces, except for two bays. The principals and wind-braces are also cusped. The central and northeastern trusses each have a tie supported by a large central post. At the junction of the main range and the northeast cross wing, there is heavy wall framing interrupted by a wide ogee head leading to a blocked first-floor doorway.
