Description
The barn located 50 meters east of Hillhampton Farmhouse is a late 16th-century threshing barn that has been altered, extended, and re-clad in the 17th century. It features a timber frame set on a stone plinth, with its exterior boarded in waney elm boards and topped with a corrugated iron roof. Key external features include cart doors at the center of the south side, a large opening in the east gable, and various smaller openings.
Inside, the barn consists of five bays, with the central three being original and an additional bay added at either end during the 17th century. The structure includes four pairs of crucks, while the later end bays are constructed using post and truss methods. The crucks have ties and collars and support through purlins. The wall framing features passing braces, with boarded lower panels and woven wattle above. Most of the timber from the 16th and 17th centuries remains, although there are some gaps and additions.
