Description

The barn at Hill Farm is a late 16th and 17th century structure, with 18th century additions. It is timber-framed, with one gable constructed of brick, and other sections retaining original daub render and weatherboarding, under a corrugated asbestos roof. The barn originally comprised three bays, later extended with a midstrey and a fourth bay around 1700. The framing features close studding with stud-to-stud tension bracing; the circa 1700 bay has primary bracing. There are slightly cranked braces to two tie beams and knees to the third. The roof is a clasped purlin design, lacking principal rafters, additional intermediate collars, and incorporating wind bracing to the original bays. The midstrey also has a wind-braced roof. An inserted opposed entrance has been added.
