Description

Shirley Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the late 15th century and 17th century, with an extension added in the early 19th century. It features a timber-frame structure with rendered infill, partly rendered and partly clad in brick, sitting on a coursed rubble plinth, topped with a tiled roof. The building has a T-plan layout, with a 15th-century cross-wing that has two framed bays aligned north to south and a central stack. The other range, also from the 15th century, was extended in the 19th century and ends at the east with a two-bay cider house that is positioned at right angles to the main structure.

The west front of the farmhouse has two storeys, with the first floor jettied and supported by curved brackets. Notably, the bracket at the south-west corner is placed diagonally to support a dragon beam, while the jetty on the south gable end is underbuilt in brick. The south front features one three-light casement window above and two three-light casement windows below. The entrance, located at the angle between the two ranges, has a lean-to wooden porch that was added in the 20th century. The framing in the cross-wing shows close-studding that is exposed. The cider house has three square panels high. Inside, there are exposed chamfered and stopped ceiling beams, and the cider house retains its cider mill and press.
