Description
Western Lye is a farmhouse that dates back to the 15th century, with significant remodeling in the late 17th century and early 19th century, and restoration in the late 20th century. It features a timber-frame structure with painted brick and rendered infill set on a coursed rubble plinth. The hipped tile roof belongs to the 17th-century section, while the rest of the building has a slate roof. The layout is in an L-shape, with the 15th-century range extending to the south and comprising three bays, including central cruck trusses of an open hall against a stack in the southern bay. The 17th-century range is located to the west and has two lateral stacks made of coursed rubble with brick dressings.
On the east front, the tall 17th-century range on the right has two storeys with a 2-light casement window on each floor, while the left side also has two storeys with three 2-light casement windows. The entrance, located to the right of the center, features a 20th-century gabled and tiled porch. The framing of the 17th-century part consists of six square panels high, while the 15th-century section has three square panels high. Inside, the former center of the open hall showcases a cruck truss with a collar and V-struts above, which was previously supported by arch-braces below. The cruck truss between the two northern bays was once a closed truss.
