Description
Freetown Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th century, remodelling in the mid-19th century, and further changes in the 20th century. It features a timber frame with sections of wattle-and-daub and painted brick infill, along with brick refacing and remodelling on the south front. The building has a sandstone plinth and stacks, and is topped with tiled roofs. The plan is irregular, with a Z-plan that is obscured by later mid-19th century additions. The main entrance is located in the remodelled south front of the west wing, which has end stacks and a large external stack on the north gable end of the north wing. The farmhouse has two storeys, attics, and a cellar.
On the south front, there are three irregularly spaced windows, which are glazing bar sashes with cambered brick heads, along with forward projecting square-plan bay windows. To the left, there are three plain sash windows, and to the right, two more plain sash windows are positioned next to a projecting wooden porch that has plain columns and a cornice, leading to a four-panelled door. The framing is revealed at the rear and on the west gable end of the west wing, indicating that the roof was likely heightened, possibly during the 18th century. This framing generally consists of five or six panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with V-struts in the gable. The large brick external stack has two unusual detached circular plan shafts. The farmhouse is situated within the site of a former moat.
