Description

A group of 13 headstones is located to the south-east of the chancel of the Church of Holy Trinity. These headstones date from the 18th century and early 19th century and are made of slate.

  1. The first headstone is rectangular with ornamental scrollwork, dedicated to Sarah, the wife of John Marriott, who died in 1760.

  2. The second is a large rectangular stone featuring ornamental foliage and flowers, commemorating Richard Porter, who died in 1815.

  3. The third headstone is shaped in a classical style with scrolled decoration, honoring Richd. Porter, who died in 1798 at the age of 92. This stone is signed "Wood."

  4. The fourth is a rectangular classical headstone for Mary, the wife of Richard Porter, who died in 1783.

  5. The fifth headstone is shaped with classical decoration, dedicated to John Skinner, who died in 1803 at the age of 73.

  6. The sixth is shaped with an oval panel featuring radiating rays, commemorating Elizabeth, the wife of John Skinner, who died in 1796.

  7. The seventh headstone is shaped with ornamental scrollwork, dedicated to Mary, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Brett, who died in 1791 at the age of 17.

  8. The eighth is a tall, shaped headstone with simple decoration for Elizabeth, the daughter of William and Hannah Smith, who died in 1794 at the age of 19.

  9. The ninth headstone has simple decoration and is dedicated to Wm. Smith, who died in 1782.

  10. The tenth is wide and shaped with scroll decoration, featuring vases and two shield-like panels, honoring William Ridge, who died in 1798, and Elizabeth, the relict of William Ridge, who died in 1799. This stone is also signed "Wood."

  11. The eleventh headstone, placed against the east wall, is rectangular with scrolled decoration, dedicated to Richard, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Birkitt, who died in 1753. It is signed "Sparrow."

  12. The twelfth headstone faces west and features a round-faced winged angel, commemorating William Spybye, who died on January 1, 1723.

  13. The thirteenth headstone also faces west and is similar to the twelfth, dedicated to Mary, the wife of William Spybye, who died on April 26, 1723.
