Description
Langar House is a small country house built in the early 18th century. It is constructed of brick and features a steeply pitched, hipped roof made of Welsh slate, supported by iron gutter-brackets. The house has two centrally placed chimney stacks and a first-floor brick band. It is two storeys high with attics and has a symmetrical five-bay facade. The central doorway is framed by a moulded door-case, a pulvinated frieze, and a dentilled, segmental pediment. On either side of the doorway are two 9 over 6-pane sash windows, with five similar sashes on the first floor. The attic includes three 19th-century gabled dormers. There is a lean-to addition on the left side and a three-bay right return featuring a doorway with console brackets supporting a hood, along with similar windows to the front. At the rear, there is a two-storey hipped roof addition that matches the main structure. Inside, there is a staircase with shaped tread ends and slender balusters that alternate between turned and twisted. A full inspection of the interior was not possible at the time of the survey. Langar House is notable as the birthplace of Samuel Butler (1835-1902), the author of "Erewhon," who was a novelist, satirist, and the son of the Reverend Thomas Butler.
