Description
The viaduct, located 150 metres south of Muskham Bridge, was built in 1770 and designed by John Smeaton. It is constructed of red brick and features 18 round arches with buttresses between them. The structure includes brick parapets that are topped with ashlar coping, which has scrolled and ramped ends along with round brick piers. This viaduct is part of Smeaton's Causeway, which was an improvement to the Great North Road. The section of the viaduct that lies within the Borough of Newark-on-Trent was listed on 19 May 1971. In 1992, the viaduct was widened.
