Description
The gazebo and section of garden wall at Kelham Hall were built around 1844-1846, likely designed by A. Salvin for J.H. Manners-Sutton. The structure possibly includes columns designed by George Gilbert Scott around 1858. The gazebo is made of brick and features a fishscale leaded octagonal dome topped with a finial. It has ashlar dressings, granite columns, a string course, and moulded and dentillated eaves. The building is a single storey with a single bay and an octagonal plan. The southwest front showcases a three-bay round-headed arcade supported by round piers with moulded bases and capitals, along with matching responds. The moulded arches are adorned with corniced keystones and are flanked by single round-headed arches featuring shouldered architraves, hoods, and corniced keystones. A shaped, moulded balustrade with round-headed coped panels and finials, along with strapwork ornament, enhances the design. At the top, there is a single pierced obelisk finial on a stem and a faceted roof finial with a wind vane.
Inside, the gazebo has a ribbed timber roof with a round-headed blind arcade above the wall plate.
The adjoining garden wall is constructed of brick, featuring a moulded ashlar plinth and ramped ashlar coping. It includes a pair of cruciform gate piers topped with stepped Renaissance revival finials.
