Description

The lodge house and gateway at Kelham Hall were built around 1858, likely designed by George Gilbert Scott for John Manners-Sutton. This structure is in the Gothic Revival style and is constructed from brick with gabled and hipped slate roofs, featuring blue brick and ashlar dressings, diaper work, and decorative bands. It has a chamfered plinth and eaves, along with moulded coped gables and paired round ridge stacks. The building is a single storey plus attics and consists of 2 bays in an L-plan layout.

Most windows are mullioned with leaded casements. The main north front includes a lean-to 19th-century addition on the left with a large mullioned casement, followed by a similar casement and a square bay window with a hipped roof and four casements. Above this bay, there is a small casement. The west front features a projecting doorway with a rebated pointed arched head and octagonal responds with moulded bases and capitals, topped by a billeted coped gable with a crocketed finial. To the right of the doorway is a casement, followed by a 20th-century brick addition with a slate roof. The left side has a panelled door, while the right side has a Yorkshire sash. The south gable has a small casement above.

Adjoining the lodge to the west is the gateway, which has curved and straight flanking walls with moulded ashlar and ramped brick coping. There are a pair of rectangular gate piers with staff moulded corners, blue brick bands, and crocketed ashlar caps. The gates are chamfered timber with panels and latticework above, featuring foliate iron cresting. Additionally, there is a wicket gate to the left with a moulded ashlar lintel and a matching panelled and latticed gate.
