Description
Elston Chapel is a former parish church, now managed by the redundant churches fund. It dates from the 12th, 14th, and 16th centuries and is constructed of coursed rubble with some ashlar. The roofs are covered with plain tiles. The east chancel features the remains of a single crocketed ridge finial. The building consists of a chancel and a nave.
On the west wall, there are two rectangular lights and a larger rectangular light above, all with a flush ashlar quoin surround. The north wall includes a 14th-century window with two ogee arched and cusped lights, featuring mouchettes beneath a flat arch. To the left, there is a slightly projecting bay with a pointed arched light. In the north chancel, there is a two-light window with a single stone mullion under a flat arch.
The buttressed east end, set on a plinth, has a 14th-century window with three ogee arched and cusped lights and mouchettes beneath a flat arch, and is marked with the date 1577. A fragment of a decoratively carved cross is located in the gable apex. The south chancel, also set on a shallow plinth, has a 14th-century window with two ogee arched and cusped lights and tracery under a flat arch, along with remains of a hood mould and human head label stops. The south nave features a similar window. The round arched south doorway displays worn 12th-century zigzag decoration on the arch and jambs. Inside, there are fragments of early 19th-century furnishings.
