Description

Kirklington Mill is a mid-19th century water mill constructed from red brick, with some blue brick and ashlar details. It features a plain tile roof and a raised eaves band made of red and blue brick. The building is set on a plinth that is deeper at the rear, with a blue brick band above it. The mill has three storeys plus a garret and consists of four bays.

The main entrance is a doorway with a plank door, flanked by single window openings, with the bay on the far right being blind. Above the entrance, there is a narrow doorway with a plank door, a single window opening to the left, and two window openings to the right. The upper section has three window openings aligned with those on the first floor. The windows originally featured 16-pane cast iron glazing bars, and all openings are topped with blue brick segmental arches that have keystones.

Breaking the eaves is a single central gabled plank hoist, and there are seven round tie plates visible on the exterior. The rear of the mill has two similar window openings on each floor, eight round tie plates, and a single depressed archway set into the plinth, which leads over the water race. In front of the mill is a road bridge with an ashlar-coped brick parapet, and beyond the mill is a pond with an iron sluice gate. The interior has not been inspected, but it is reputed to contain no machinery.
