Description
The K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design made of cast iron, painted red overall with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns sit on the top panels, rather than being perforated. Rectangular white display signs read 'TELEPHONE' beneath the shallow-curved roof. The kiosk has modernised internal equipment. A door handle is missing, and two of the telephone signs are damaged, but all glass windows remain present. Located in the centre of the village, it is adjacent to the Grade II listed Smithy and a short distance south-east of the Grade II listed Manor Farm House. It contributes to the group value of these listed buildings, particularly due to its strong visual relationship with the Smithy.
Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, the K6 telephone kiosk was developed from his earlier K2 design, which drew inspiration from Neo-classical architecture. The K6 was more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective for mass production. Over 70,000 were eventually produced, with many being replaced in the 1960s, though they remain an iconic feature of Britain's streetscapes.
The kiosk is designated at Grade II for its iconic 20th-century industrial design by Giles Gilbert Scott and for its group value with the nearby listed buildings.
