Description

The building at 15-19 Appleton Gate comprises three houses, later adapted for use as a cafe, shop, and residential dwellings. Built around 1800, it has undergone alterations in the late 19th century and mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a concrete tile roof. It features dentillated eaves, a single coped gable, and two gable stacks along with one ridge stack. It is three storeys high and originally had a five-window front, featuring segment-headed glazing bar sashes. The leftmost window has been replaced by a 20th-century cross casement, and the window to its right is blank. The central three windows project forward. Above these, there is a symmetrical arrangement of smaller, similar sashes, with two windows blanked and the leftmost window replaced by a 20th-century casement. The ground floor features three late 19th-century shopfronts, united by a continuous bracketed fascia. The cafe, on the left, has a splayed doorway flanked by single-pane windows. Adjacent is an entry and a larger single-pane window. The right-hand shopfront has reeded pilasters, paterae, and enriched brackets. It has a splayed central doorway with a glazed door and overlight, flanked by single-pane windows.
