Description
Winthorpe Bridge, built in 1964, carries the bypass over the River Trent. Designed by engineer A Goldstein of R Travers Morgan and Partners, it features a prestressed concrete bridge superstructure supported by reinforced concrete piers and abutments. The bridge is a three-span continuous structure measuring 130-260-130 feet, with nine small box girders that were cast in-situ on falsework. The outer faces of the bridge have a vertically fluted surface, and the fascia is made of precast concrete units that expose dark blue Shap granite aggregate. The abutment wing walls are distinctive, designed as tilted cylinders. This bridge is noted for its architectural quality, representing a transitional style between the 1950s and 1960s, showcasing continuous box girders without edge cantilevers. It is recognized as an exceptional example of an unusual type of bridge.
