Description
Newstead War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is located on concrete slabs within a grassed area that is enclosed by black wrought iron railings, featuring a gate on the west side.
The memorial consists of a granite wheel-head cross atop a tapering shaft, which is set on a tapering plinth. This structure stands on three rectangular steps.
Each side of the plinth has a plaque with white lettering. The eastern face features a plaque inscribed with "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE/ OFFICERS AND MEN OF NEWSTEAD/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919," followed by the names of three men, including their rank and regiment. Below this, on the upper step, is the inscription "PASS NOT THIS CROSS IN SORROW BUT IN PRIDE/ AND MAY YOU LIVE AS NOBLY AS THEY DIED." The northern and southern faces of the plinth list a total of 14 servicemen, seven on each face, all identified by rank and regiment. The western face of the plinth is inscribed with "1939 – 1945," followed by the names of five servicemen, also listed by rank and regiment.
