Description
A stable range, now used as houses, was built in 1862 by M. E. Hadfield for F. W. Webb. It is constructed of coursed rubble with gabled and pyramidal slate roofs and ashlar dressings, and is in a Gothic Revival style. The building is single-storey with attics, set on a chamfered plinth with moulded string courses, coped gables, kneelers, and masks. It has five ridge, single gable, grouped ridge, and two side wall stacks. The rectangular plan incorporates a central yard. Windows are largely double ogee lancets with leaded casements. The south front features a buttressed gable to the left and a projecting gabled gatehouse with a square tower at the return angle. To the left of the gatehouse are six lancets; the gatehouse gable displays Arms in a panel. To the right is a single lancet. Above the lancets to the left is a lancet and two cross-eaves gabled dormers. The tower to the right has a double lancet, a small dormer above it, and an external stack inscribed with the datestone 'WFW 1862'. Further above, the tower has four gabled round openings, an eaves band with gargoyles, a pyramidal roof with a traceried bell turret, and a wind vane. The east side has a gable with a canted parapeted bay window to the left, and a large gabled dormer with a round window and beast masks to the right. The parapeted north side includes three lancets, and two buttresses to the right. The west side features two gables, each with a triangular window. Inside the courtyard, the south side has the gatehouse gable with a mullioned casement, and two hipped dormers to the right. The east and west sides each have a similar dormer. The north side has four chamfered doorways with segmental heads. The courtyard also contains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
