Description

The Fort, Fort Lodge and Monk’s Laundry are a mock fort, dating to circa 1770 and the mid-19th century. They were built for the fifth Lord Byron. The building is constructed of coursed and squared rubble, dressed stone, and ashlar, in a Gothick style. It has a chamfered plinth, a moulded string course, a crenellated parapet with machiolations, and a single coped gable. There are single ridge and external corner stacks. The building has one and two storeys and seven bays. Windows are 20th-century casements. The west front features a blocked entry positioned off-centre, flanked by single square towers with crosslets. To the left of the entry is a double French window flanked by single round bosses, then a single casement. Further to the left is a round tower with a glazing bar casement, flanked to the left by a door and to the right by a mullioned casement, with another similar casement to the left again. To the right are three casements and a French window alternating with three round bosses. A round corner tower is present. Above, to the left, are four mullioned casements. The square towers each have a square blank panel. To the right is a casement, and in the corner tower are three round windows. The south side has a projecting central square bay with a triple lancet and four blank circles. To the left are two casements and a round boss. To the right is a pointed archway. The building is one of two mock forts built alongside the lake and used as a setting for mock naval battles.
