Description
Boatswain's Monument is a funerary monument located 30 meters north-east of Newstead Abbey, built in 1808 in memory of Lord Byron's favorite dog, Boatswain. The monument is constructed from ashlar stone with marble dressings. It features a round plinth made up of seven steps, with the upper two steps being moulded. The square chest has coved corners and displays a marble tablet on each side, each bordered with guilloche patterns. The eastern side includes a dedication and verse written by Byron. Atop the monument is a depressed pyramidal lid with a Classical urn finial.
