Description
Willoughby Almshouses, built in 1685 for George Willoughby, is a group of eight almshouses made of brick with plain tile roofs and ashlar dressings. The building features chamfered plinths, moulded coped gables, and parapets, along with three grouped ridge stacks and a single gable stack. The doors have chamfered ashlar surrounds, while the windows are fitted with chamfered mullions, cast iron leaded casements, and flat drip moulds.
The south front showcases a higher central bay with a blocked central doorway, flanked on the left by a casement and on the right by two doorways. Further along, there is another casement, followed by two doors and two more casements. Continuing to the right, there are single doors, a door, and a casement. Above this arrangement is a central sundial, with a triple casement above it and a smaller casement to its right. There are three shouldered coped gabled dormers on the left and four on the right, each containing a casement. The east gable features a diamond casement above.
The adjoining front courtyard wall has ribbed half-round coping and two gateways with square piers. The outer lower boundary wall includes a central gateway with square piers, all of which are topped with ball finials.
