Description

Babworth Hall is a country house built in the mid-18th century. In 1790, John Bridgeman Simpson had the brick whitened by landscape designer Humphry Repton, who also designed the grounds. In 1850, architect William Burn restored the red brick and made alterations to the windows and parapet. In the mid-20th century, much of the rear and service wings were demolished.

The house is constructed of red brick and ashlar with slate roofs; the left wing has a hipped roof while the right wing features a pyramidal roof. It has three yellow brick stacks, an ashlar parapet, and a moulded cornice. The building is two and a half storeys tall with five bays, flanked by three-storey single bay wings that slightly project and have ashlar quoins. It is set on an ashlar plinth with ashlar bands on the first and second floors.

The central doorway features a six-panelled door with a fluted surround for each panel and corner patera, topped by a traceried overlight. This doorway is flanked by single 20th-century Doric pilasters that support a slightly projecting pediment. On either side of the doorway are two glazing bar sash windows, with larger sash windows in the outer wings. Above, there are six smaller sash windows, with the central four being slightly smaller, and six similar smaller sashes on the top floor, following the same pattern. All windows have lugged architrave surrounds with single flush quoins in each jamb and at the base. In front of the second bay, there are single ashlar orbs, and projecting from the plinth on either side of the doorway are single ashlar blocks that support 20th-century urns.
