Description
Clarborough Top Bridge is a canal bridge built to carry Sneath Lane over the Chesterfield Canal, which opened fully in 1777 and was engineered by the notable canal engineer James Brindley.
The bridge is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and copings. It features a single elliptical arch that spans both the canal and the canal towpath. There are sloping approaches at both ends, supported by substantial raking abutments. The arch springs from a deep ashlar band set on a low brick plinth. On either side of the arch are shallow pilasters that rise into the bridge parapets, which terminate as rectangular piers topped with shallow-pitched ashlar caps. The central section of the bridge has brick parapet walls with a deep ashlar coping. At the top of the arch, a band course extends into the downward sloping abutment wall parapets, finishing at low terminal piers with ashlar caps.
