Description

Numbers 37, 38, and 39 with attached smithy is a row of three cottages built in the late 19th century for the Newcastle Estate. The cottages are constructed from red brick with ashlar dressings and feature tile roofs. They have three large red brick chimney stacks and ashlar coped gables with moulded ridge finials, with the larger gables also having kneelers. The building is set on a plinth and consists of a single storey plus an attic, with seven bays. The outer bays are gabled and slightly project.

To the right and set back is an additional single bay. The central section has a tripartite glazing bar casement flanked by doorways and similar casements. Further to the right and left are doorways, including one with double doors, ashlar hinge blocks, and a chamfered ashlar arch. All doorways have plank doors with decorative iron hinges, and all windows feature ashlar sills and lintels.

Above the central section is a gabled half dormer with a pair of pointed arched glazing bar casements, which have chamfered ashlar arches and ashlar lintels. On either side are small glazing bar casements with ashlar sills and lintels. There are also similar dormers on the outer sides, each containing pairs of arched casements. In the outer gabled bays, there are pairs of similar arched casements, and in the set back bay to the right is a small casement. Each half dormer apex features a recessed rectangular panel with an ashlar sill and lintel, and each outer gable apex contains a single ashlar trefoil motif.
