Description
Bothamsall Hall is a house on Church Lane in Bothamsall, dating from the early 19th century (circa 1845) with later 19th and 20th century additions. It is built in ashlar, red brick and render with plain tile roofs featuring seven various stacks. The roofline is defined by ashlar coped gables, some with kneelers.
The building is two storeys with a complex and irregular form across all elevations.
The south front contains ten irregular bays of varying heights and materials. The five bays to the right are ashlar; the remainder are brick and render. From right to left, there is a circa 1845 two-bay wing where the right bay is single storey and the left is two storeys and gabled. This gabled section contains two arched windows, each with two arched and cusped lights and two quatrefoils. Within the spandrels is a decorative cross set into a quatrefoil and circle, with hood moulds featuring decorative label stops.
To the left of this wing are three early 19th century two-storey bays set back, with the left bay being gabled. This section includes a doorway with a glazing bar door and traceried overlight, a single fixed light with lead glazing bars, and a large projecting single storey late 19th century canted bay containing a five-light cross casement with lead glazing bars and smaller similar casements in the side walls.
An early 19th century two-storey single gabled bay projects further left, featuring a tripartite cross casement with lead glazing bars, hood mould and label stops. The four leftmost bays are 20th century additions, single storey with slight projection and a moulded parapet with pilaster strip buttresses terminating in the band below the parapet. These bays contain cross casements with lead glazing bars, a doorway with double glazing bar door with brattishing and depressed arch (with hood mould and label stops), and a canted bay with three glazing bar casements.
The upper storey of the south front features, from right to left: a pair of cusped and arched lights with a single central decorative cross in a quatrefoil and circle; a two-light stone mullion casement; a three-light stone mullion casement with lead glazing bars and drip mould; and a two-light stone mullion casement with hood mould and label stops.
The east front is two storeys with two gabled bays. The earlier right bay, slightly set back, has a single tripartite glazing bar cross casement. To its left is a single storey projecting bay window with three arched and cusped lights with quatrefoils above. Above this is a two-light stone mullion casement, with a three-light arched and cusped light window to the left.
The north or entrance front is highly irregular with eleven bays. It features a single storey closed and gabled porch with a chamfered arched doorway and panelled door. To the right, within a projecting lean-to, is a single small casement. Further right, projecting from a gabled wing, is a lower two-storey single bay with parapet and a single orb at the left angle, containing a small glazing bar casement. Adjacent is a projecting and gabled bay with a single tripartite casement with glazing bars in the outer lights.
The remaining seven bays to the right are rendered brick with glazing bar sashes, a doorway, and a projecting single storey bay. Above, in the left gable is a single light with lead glazing bars. The projecting bay contains a large four-light cross casement. Further right are three small glazing bar sashes, with additional glazing bar sashes in the rendered bays. All openings except those in the rendered north front are surrounded by ashlar.
