Description
Blyth New Bridge, built around 1770, is a significant structure likely designed by John Carr of York for William Mellish of Blyth Hall. The bridge and its retaining walls are made of ashlar stone and feature wrought iron railings. It is set on a plinth and has three rusticated ashlar arches supported by flat rusticated piers. The eastern side has a dentillated cornice, while the western side features a moulded cornice. Each pier is topped with an ashlar block that has coping; the western blocks are decorated with roundels, and the eastern blocks have roundels above swags. Between these blocks, there are coped and damaged balusters that create a balustraded parapet, which ends in decorative ashlar scrolls resting on the retaining approach walls. These walls are also coped and include wrought iron railings with rusticated round terminal piers.
