Description

The Fourways Hotel is an early 18th-century building, likely dating to around 1770, with later 20th-century additions. It is constructed of painted brick with a pantile roof, stone coped gables, kneelers, and two brick gable stacks. The main block is two-and-a-half storeys and three bays, set on a plinth with bands marking the first and second floors. The central bay slightly projects and is topped by a pediment. A central doorway is framed by a relieving arch and features a 20th-century door with an overlight and a narrow, decorated wooden panel above. Wooden brackets support a small projecting pediment. There are single glazing bar sash windows flanking the doorway, with three similar sashes above and three smaller sashes on the top floor. To the left is an early 18th-century, two-storey brick cross wing with a concrete pantile roof, hipped on the right and with a left-hand coped gable and kneelers, and a single brick ridge stack. This wing contains three glazing bar Yorkshire sashes on the first floor, and a single 20th-century sash window on the ground floor gable end; a parapet obscures the roofline. A further single-storey, 20th-century brick cross wing adjoins the left side of the main building. The group value of the hotel lies in its historic character and contribution to the surrounding area.
