Description
The Mantles is a late 18th-century house with a 19th-century extension. It is constructed of ashlar, with a hipped slate roof featuring a deep overhang at the eaves and four rendered stacks, two at the rear. The house is two storeys high and originally comprised three bays. It stands on a plinth with a ground floor sill band, a first floor band, and a first floor sill band. A central doorway has double, half-glazed doors with fielded panels and a traceried overlight, flanked by single Doric pilasters. A further pair of Doric columns support a porch with a decorated entablature. To either side of the main doorway are single glazing bar sashes, with three similar sashes above.
A 1.1/2-storey, three-bay, ashlar extension, also with a hipped slate roof and two ashlar stacks, is set back to the left. The extension sits on a plinth and has three sashes on its front elevation, with three matching sashes above.
The rear elevation features a six-panel door with a plain overlight and single flanking pilasters supporting a slightly projecting hood. Inside, a wrought iron staircase has a two-flight return, with two balusters per tread, alternating between treads with stylized leaf decorations and treads with acanthus knobs. The drawing room and breakfast room contain single carved wooden fireplaces.
