Description
The war memorial in East Markham was unveiled on September 21, 1920, by Mr. W. Chapman J.P., the Chairman of East Markham Parish Council, and dedicated by Reverend J. O. Crosse, the Vicar of East Markham. It was designed and made by Sharpe & Hoggard from Retford and funded by Mr. Henry Cowlishaw, with the land donated by Mrs. Drinkwater. The memorial is constructed from polished pink granite and has a square plan featuring four lower steps that are rock-faced. Above these steps is a tapering base with double chamfered plinths, which are inscribed with the names of those who fell in the Great War, the Second World War, and the Korean War. The memorial is topped with a moulded cap that supports a tall broken Doric column. The broken column is a deliberate design choice symbolizing lives cut short, with the top of the column placed on the lower corner step.
