Description
This is a house, formerly a mill, with associated outbuildings and a surrounding wall containing mill races, dating to the 17th and 18th centuries, with restoration work carried out in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of red brick and ashlar with pantile roofs and a single brick stack at the rear left. Dentillated eaves are present on all wings except for the single-storey section and the wing containing the archway.
The main building is two storeys plus a garret, consisting of three bays. To the right, a lower two-storey, four-bay wing is slightly set back, with the final two bays receding at an angle. A two-storey, three-bay wing sits to the left and was originally two storeys plus a garret. Further to the left and also slightly set back is a two-storey, two-bay wing, followed by a single-storey, single-bay wing. The left-hand two-storey plus garret wing has ashlar on the ground floor. A single-storey gabled ashlar porch features a blocked sides and a shaped, chamfered entrance arch with chamfer stops. To the right of the porch is a large arched glazing bar fixed light, and a single glazing bar fixed light with a small blocked opening below. The right wing has a blocked window opening, a glazing bar Yorkshire sash under a segmental arch, a small 20th-century casement, and a blocked doorway. The left wings have, from right to left, a glazing bar casement with blocked arches below, a glazing bar Yorkshire sash, an archway with a flush ashlar quoin surround dated 1783, a glazing bar Yorkshire sash, and a similar glazing bar sash. Above the porch is a glazing bar Yorkshire sash, and the upper floor to the left has two 20th-century casements, a glazing bar Yorkshire sash, and a glazing bar casement. The upper floor to the right has a tall glazing bar sliding sash, a glazing bar casement, and a glazing bar Yorkshire sash, all under segmental arches.
Graffiti dated 1722 and 1792 is visible on the walls, along with an inscription reading ‘Thomas Seaton 1756’. Inside, there is an inscription reading '1778 IW TPX', along with a remaining section of the original mill shaft.
In front of the mill is a brick wall with ashlar coping that contains three mill races. To the left are two brick arches with a single central ashlar cutwater, and remnants of a further similar cutwater to the right. Further to the right is a single ashlar arch.
