Description

The Old Hall is a late 15th-century house, built between 1471 and 1484 for Sir Thomas Burgh. It has a half-H plan, with a central great hall. The east wing was faced with brick, and the west wing received chimneys and a South gable around 1600 for William Hickman. John Wesley preached in the great hall in 1759, 1761 and 1764 by invitation of Sir Neville Hickman. The building is a fine example of a late medieval dwelling and was undergoing restoration at the time of survey. The Old Hall forms a group with numbers 1 to 7 (odd) Cobden Street, including number 2a Ropery Road.
