Description
1-4 Station Road is a house that has been divided into four properties. It dates back to the 16th century but has undergone extensive alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original timber frame is largely underbuilt and encased in brick from the 19th and 20th centuries. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos and is hipped at one end, featuring two axial brick ridge stacks on the front range. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys with an irregular three-bay front.
The entrance is off-centre and features a 19th-century panelled door, flanked by single glazing bar sash windows, with a 20th-century window to the left. On the first floor, there are three glazing bar sashes, one casement, and a taller 20th-century window. The left gable shows a rendered corner post, while the right side elevation has a wall plate that projects slightly, indicating where the original frame once existed. There is also a small square panel on the left gable that is likely from the 19th century and is inscribed but illegible.
Internally, despite many alterations, some original features remain. Bay posts resting on stylobates can be seen at approximately 6-foot intervals, with straight braces at first floor level. The ceiling girders are visible, and the one in the chamber to the left of the front (in house No. 1) is richly moulded and stopped, indicating it was likely the parlour. The fireplace there has stone chamfered reveals. In the right wing, the fireplaces and ceiling girders are simpler, suggesting this area served as the service wing of the house.
