Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church built around 1796, with restorations in 1895 and an addition in 1925. It features squared ironstone and limestone rubble with brick dressings and some areas of render, topped with plain tiled roofs. The church has a nave that includes a western bellcote and a south porch, along with a chancel and vestry. At the west end, there is a slight projection that supports a bellcote with a semi-circular arched brick head. The west wall contains a single lancet window, and a dentillated brick eaves course runs around the building.

On the north wall of the nave, there are two three-light leaded windows with semi-circular brick arched heads, which have ashlar key and impost blocks. The rendered vestry features hipped and gabled roofs and includes a Diocletian window in the north wall. There is a 20th-century east door and window. The chancel has an east window with two lights, pointed timber tracery, and an arched brick head. Between two semi-circular headed windows in the chancel's south wall, there is a blocked doorway with a brick segmental head. The nave's south wall mirrors the north wall. The gabled south porch, added in 1925, has a pointed outer doorway topped with a wooden cross, side benches, and diagonally planked double inner doors with a chamfered head.

Inside, the nave walls are adorned with raised and fielded dado panelling. The lower part of the open chancel screen features turned balusters with a moulded handrail, likely a remnant from the early 18th century. All other fittings date from the 19th century, including painted wooden commandment boards on the nave walls and an octagonal moulded font.
