Description

The water tower, built between 1897 and 1898, was designed by engineer Henry Riley. It is constructed of red brick with yellow brick panels, some sandstone dressings, iron-framed windows, and features a lead roof. The tower has a hexagonal plan and is positioned against a reservoir embankment, consisting of four storeys plus a semi-basement storey, which is accessible through a doorway on the east side.

Four sides of the tower have narrow round-arched windows on the ground and first floors, set within yellow brick panels and featuring arches made of rubbed red bricks. The rear side mirrors this design but includes a ground-floor doorway with a shouldered lintel. The front side, facing north-east, has a round window at the first floor level. At ground-floor level, there is a marble plaque with a pedimented sandstone surround, which commemorates the commencement of construction by the Urban District Council of Gainsborough in 1897 and lists the names of council members, the clerk, engineer, and contractor.

A sandstone cornice with a Lombard frieze separates the third and fourth storeys. The third storey, which is otherwise blank, has two round-arched windows with sandstone surrounds, transoms, and brick aprons. The upper storey features two round-arched windows on each side, separated by sandstone pilasters. The six-sided lead roof is topped with a crowsnest that has iron railings and a flagpole.
