Description
The gates and piers to Nettleham Hall, dating from around 1720 and attributed to Francis or William Smith, are accompanied by 19th-century piers, flanking walls, and a screen. Constructed from ashlar and wrought iron, the central double gates feature square section bars with curly finials, decorative rails, and spearhead terminations at the base, along with curlicue side panels and an elaborate overthrow that includes a central circular panel with foliage decoration. On either side of the gates are square ashlar gate piers with recessed panels and dentillated cornices topped with knops. There are also single 18th-century pedestrian gates with overthrows that match the central gates. The outer sides have square ashlar piers with plain cornices. Curving flanking ashlar walls lead to a 19th-century screen of plain railing with spiked terminals, which ramps up towards the pierced iron piers at either end. The gates were originally from the demolished church of St. Peter at Arches in Lincoln and provide access to the derelict 18th-century Nettleham Hall.
